Audio-Technica Hotaru: When Vinyl Becomes a Sensory Work of Art

In the world of high-fidelity audio, there are milestones that redefine the listening experience. The unveiling of the Audio-Technica Hotaru at Milan Design Week 2025 is undoubtedly one of them. This turntable is not just a playback device—it’s an artistic statement, an engineering feat, and a tribute to the senses. Designed to captivate both the ears and the eyes, the Hotaru embodies the perfect blend of technical innovation and emotional aesthetics.

A Design That Defies Gravity (Literally)

The Hotaru’s acrylic platter doesn’t rest—it levitates. Thanks to advanced magnetic levitation technology, the platter floats above a precision-machined aluminum base, drastically reducing unwanted vibrations. The result is near-surgical isolation, allowing the stylus to trace grooves with pristine clarity. Visually, the effect is mesmerizing: the music seems to hover in the air.

Precision Engineering with an Analog Soul

At its core, the Hotaru features a statically balanced carbon fiber tonearm, paired with a custom VM stereo cartridge designed for high-fidelity performance. The belt-driven system is powered by a DC servo motor, delivering precise playback at both 33⅓ and 45 RPM—ensuring unwavering stability that will satisfy even the most demanding audiophiles.

And here's where it defies expectations: the Hotaru includes built-in full-range speakers (63.5 mm) and tweeters, offering a frequency response from 60 Hz to 20,000 Hz. It delivers rich bass, articulate mids, and crisp highs—performance you'd typically expect from much larger audio setups.

Lighting That Interprets the Music

The name Hotaru, which means “firefly” in Japanese, was no coincidence. This turntable includes a 20-color LED lighting system that does more than illuminate—it reacts to the music. Users can select from three lighting modes: static, smooth gradient transitions, or rhythm-based pulses. The result is an immersive, multisensory performance that turns each listening session into an audiovisual event.

A Limited Edition Object of Desire

Crafted with premium materials like aluminum, acrylic, and solid brass feet, the Hotaru weighs in at 12 kg and makes a striking visual and acoustic statement. It's not just a player—it's a centerpiece for those who live and breathe music.

Only 1,000 units will be produced worldwide, making it a true collector’s item. It launches at a price of 9,999 €, with pre-orders open until May 30, 2025. First shipments are expected to go out in October.
