At KTS, we're taking advantage of the fact that the immediate hype surrounding the song and the series has passed, and that you probably already know the entire song, to talk to you about the great artist behind its lyrics.

Who is Kate Bush?

We decided to listen to you in order to bring you musical news for this summer 2022, and precisely Kate Bush does not stop being heard around the world. In this article we tell you who she is and why she has become the most listened to artist of the year, and of course, what Stranger Things has to do with all this.

Although you may have heard something by now, you probably know very little about Kate Bush's life.

Kate Bush is a 64-year-old British singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the 1970s under the guidance of a great family friend: guitarist David Gilmour , star of  Pink Floyd .

What Kind of Voice Does Kate Bush Have?

Thanks to her extravagant style, her artistic talents and her passion for dance, Bush managed to become one of the most influential women in the United Kingdom at the end of the 20th century. Kate's voice is a soprano and she captivated everyone who heard her at that time. A child prodigy from a very musical family, she began to show her inner strength with the songs she sang and wrote.

The composer, pianist, producer and dancer, thanks to David Gilmour - who sponsored her and shouted from the rooftops that Bush would be the next big star in the United Kingdom - signed a contract with EMI Records that catapulted her to the top of the music charts.

Bush had already shown her talents as a composer since she was 11 years old. With one of her best-known songs to date: Wuthering Heights , she managed to be present week after week at number one of the most listened to songs in England. Wuthering Heights , the artist's single released in 1978, is inspired by the protagonists of the novel of the same name, in Spanish: Cumbres Borrascosas, by the British writer Emily Bront ë . The gothic-style romantic novel caught Bush and made magic within her, which led her to be inspired and write this song that you have surely also heard.

And if you haven't had the pleasure, we'll leave it for you below. It's part of the album The Kick Inside :

Bush's musical career remained in the era of vinyl records and cassettes, and remained in the memory of many with songs such as Babooshka , released in 1980, from the album NeverForEver remastered in 2018.

You probably haven't heard of her until now, but Kate's career has been long and great. If you're a vinyl record collector, you know what we're talking about. Since she started her musical career, she hasn't stopped breaking records, she catapulted herself as the first female artist to reach number one with a song she composed herself thanks to Wuthering Heights and she hasn't stopped surprising us.

When Was Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill Released?

It was already 1985 and Kate Bush launched a new single that, although it reached number three among the most listened to songs in the United Kingdom, did not skyrocket: Running Up That Hill from her fifth studio album Hounds Of Love .

At that time it reached number 30 in the United States and did not manage to get beyond number three in its country.

At the time, there were a lot of strings pulled behind this song; the main title of the song was A Deal With God , a name that the producers did not like very much. Among other things, it was said that it could hurt the sensibilities of many people. Mentioning God in the title of a song that was expected to reach the musical heights was not exactly appropriate.

On the other hand, it was believed that with that name it would not reach any top, so they decided to change it and give it the name we know: Running Up That Hill , and the most curious thing is that with that name it did not achieve much either. It became a single that only saw the light of day for a few days and that was shelved again without any other choice.

Kate Bush Today

The challenging thing about it is that today, 37 years after its release, Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) has broken three world records: it has been in the top 10 for nine consecutive weeks in the UK, it has remained in the top 40 most listened to songs for 13 weeks and it has been in the top 100 for 20 weeks.

At 64 , Kate Bush has taken the title from Cher , becoming the oldest female artist to reach number one in the UK music charts. Cher undoubtedly applauded the achievement and hugged Bush.

The British singer is back in the news thanks to her song Running Up That Hill, which appeared in one of the most important episodes of the Stranger Things series, and it has not stopped playing for almost the entire season. Day after day, and episode after episode, we have hummed Bush's song to the sound of the characters' screams and the fear of " the upside down", territory of Vecna, the villain of this fourth season, from whom Max is saved with Running Up That Hill.

Stranger Things: Season 4

Many say that Netflix had to search through drawers, in the closet of forgotten objects or in the so-called “trunk of memories” to get this song and use it in, without a doubt, the series of the moment and the most anticipated season: you know well that a couple of years had to pass for this fourth season to see the light, but according to its executive producer, Shawn Levy, there were compelling reasons behind the delay: As much as it hurts our viewers that so much time has passed, it hurts the team more. It's kind of a perfect storm that combines the COVID shutdown, the slow pace of filming because of the security protocols, necessary in all aspects. And coincidentally we chose season 4 as the most ambitious of all the seasons of the series ,” Levy explains in an interview for Collider

The truth is that Bush's choice of song has become a global success and the clear financial investment behind this season has us all open-mouthed and hooked.

And if you intend to catch up or start watching this series that captivates not only the new generations, forget about the video that we leave you below because it is a clear spoiler of what happens to Max and how Running Up That Hill works its magic.

Running Up That Hill Not only has it become the most listened to song in the United Kingdom and a top three hit in the United States, but it has also managed to get vinyl record collectors to decorate their shelves and their wonderful drawers full of treasures with this album Hounds Of Love .

The Vinyl record stores have prepared for this new wave and already have the album in their hands. Go ahead and get it!
