Why solid wood changes everything
Most vinyl furniture is MDF or particle board with a wood-look laminate. It is cheap to ship and quick to assemble, but it was engineered for light, even loads — not for the dense, concentrated weight of records. Under a packed shelf it absorbs ambient humidity, the fibres swell, and the panel loses rigidity. Within roughly 18 months you see the bow, then the slide-back, then the lean.
FSC-certified solid wood behaves differently because it is a continuous structural material, not glued particles. It holds its shape under sustained load, resists humidity swing, and carries the full weight of a serious collection with zero projected deflection across a lifetime of use.
