Our numbers are based on real-world measurements: 1000 LPs ≈ 30cm thickness of spines, average weight 0.20kg (standard) to 0.25kg (180g), median Discogs value by genre. Expect ±5% accuracy.

We multiply your record count by genre-weighted median Discogs value (Electronic, Rock, Jazz, Hip-Hop all differ). When you import from Discogs we use your actual list instead of averages.

We map your total linear shelf space + weight + weekly access pattern to one of 7 tiers. Each tier has 3-4 curated KTS units designed to hold exactly your collection size with room to grow.

What the Vinyl Storage Calculator does

The Vinyl Storage Calculator tells you exactly how much storage furniture your record collection needs. Enter your number of records — or connect your Discogs collection — and it returns the linear shelf space, the total weight, and the storage system that fits, from 50 to 1,000+ LPs.

How it works (the math)

Records are stored upright, spine‑out. The calculator uses measured 12‑inch LP averages: about 0.5 cm of linear space and 0.24 kg per record once it’s in a protective outer sleeve. So 200 records need ~1 metre of shelf and weigh ~48 kg. Heavier formats add up fast:

  • Gatefolds & double LPs — count each as ~1.5 records for space.
  • 180 g audiophile pressings — ~0.30 kg each; a 500‑record audiophile collection can top 150 kg.
  • Thick outer sleeves — add ~10% to linear space, so plan one size up.

Quick reference: space, weight & the system that fits

Records Linear space Weight Recommended system
50 ~25 cm ~12 kg The Crate / Vinyl Modular cube
100 ~50 cm ~24 kg Modular Foreigner (120+ LP)
200 ~1.0 m ~48 kg Vinyl Modular x4 (200+ LP)
300 ~1.5 m ~72 kg Vinyl Modular x4 + module
500 ~2.5 m ~120 kg The Digger’s Wall (600+ LP)
800 ~4.0 m ~192 kg The Digger’s Library x16 (800+ LP)
1,000 ~5.0 m ~240 kg The Digger’s Library x16 + modules

Why weight is the number that matters

Most storage is rated for ~13 kg per compartment — the weight of a flat‑pack particleboard cube. At 200 records (~48 kg) a typical cube carries nearly 4× its rating, which is why shelves bow and records lean. Every Keep Them Spinning system is solid wood validated to 23–25 kg per cube.
